Who was the better philosopher..? ?

January 6th, 2009
  • Socrates, Plato or Aristotle?
Explanation of why for best answer please!

  • Perhaps it is not a contest as to who was the "best", which is a subjective value judgment.

Each had a slightly different understanding and approach to their personal understanding of that which they viewed and the manner in which they viewed the same.

Perhaps it would be wiser to experiment with the philosophies of each so as to ascertain which is of greater benefit to the most persons and which works to the greatest advantage to yourself personally in this present manifestation.

    Test everything!

May it be well with you.

  • The idea of 'better' is to me not relevant as it is more about how their various ideas resonate with the hearer and relates to their personal experience

  • We don't really know Socrates directly; we have nothing he wrote. What we know of him is what other philosophers ascribed to him, and most of that came from Plato.

Plato is flawed as a philosopher because (a) he was not an empiricist--he didn't work from evidence to conclusions (b) he seems to have spent much of his career suffering from a blend of guilt and dudgeon over the execution of his beloved teacher Socrates, which seems to have poisoned his thinking a little.

So I'm voting for Aristotle, whose powers of observation provided us with ideas about persuasion, dramaturgy, and ethics that are still widely admired today.

  • Jesus!
because he died for what he believed and now we all believe it too! the power of persuasion

  • All are good in their own way .

  • The three were very different

Socrates - lively irreverent fun - laid foundations to philosophy

    Plato - imaginative - perfectionist - ordered

Aristotle - laid foundations for science

I love all three - I think they all have there place.

  • While I agree with answer 1 choice for valid reasons I think "better" is likely way to subjective, and opinionated, as is the trait of most Philosophers. It's not a Science, even if statements made manifest in a reality sense. It's theory, observation judging historical subject matter, predictions? opinions about the end of time, conducting ones life, etc. etc. etc.

Thankfully it's also cyclical and allows even the guy on the steam grate on the city sidewalk to espouse his own Philosophies.

  • I think Plato harmed western thought for centuries with his "idealism" and all that.

EDIT: I agree with 1st poster about flaws with Plato, well said.

  • Aristotle for his contribution to philosophy, physics, biology, psychology, and politics.
