Widescreen 16:9 ratio

January 6th, 2009
  • alright i have a wide screen tv i set up xbmc for widescreen out put and ajusted everything but for some reason when its wide screen every thing is unusualy skinny is there a way to fix this besides messing with the zoom and pixles for every video? thanks :help:

  • yeah,

am i correct in thinking you have to move the arrows to the corners of the screen? if so i did that...

thanks for the v quick reply!

  • did you both calibrate xbmc? its in the video settings someplace. you define the screen corners, the correct pixel ratio, and the placement of subs.

  • hey,

mine seems to do this too... i have ms dash set to 16:9, and my tv says that the input is in widescreen format (it switches to wide mode automatically), but the picture on 16:9 videos still has bars at the top and bottom.

i have checked the ratios on these vids and they are definitely 16:9.

if i alter the pixel ratio in xbmc (the option just below zoom on the osd) to 0.87 that makes mine look ok, but i dont see why this should be necessary. it's like xbmc stretches & squashes the vid before putting it on screen.

  • right, in the video calibration settings i have now reverse engineered the pixel ratio to look about right (thanks kraqh3d -i didnt figure that setting the square = setting the pix ratio! duh!)...

i set the square in the vid calibration so that the ratio = 1, then had a look at the 16:9 video playing. it made the aspect ratio look all wrong. so while watching this vid i altered the pixel ratio using the osd, this needed a ratio of 0.68 to look right.

so... to make this setting the default i divided 1/0.68 = 1.47ish, then put this set this as the pixel ratio in the video calibration screen (the bit where you have to make the square look square). this has made the vids look nice and full in widescreen! thanks mate!

the square on the calibration screen doesnt really look square to me though, looks thinner than it is tall... maybe thats just an optical illusion!
