How to hide member group info

January 6th, 2009
  • We have several private forums that based on the sensitivity of the topics I would prefer the member information not be visible (for instance Post partum depression support).

Some of our public groups I'd like to remain publicly viewable, but am willing to make them ALL hidden if that is the only option.

I found instructions on how to do for 3.6, but they don't work for 3.7 (the code to remove isn't in the memberinfo in my template).

Thanks for your help... I'm pending two much requested groups on being able to hide the membership list.

  • 3.7.0 is not officially supported. This was made clear.

Publicly Joinable Groups are not supposed to be hidden by design, hence the 'Public' part.

This requires modifying the code. We cannot officially support code modifications or forums running modified code, however you can try searching or asking for help with this over at www.vbulletin.org.

  • I *think* the template you are looking for is memberinfo_membergroupbit. Try commenting out the contents in there and see if that does what you want (and if it does, delete the contents because commented out stuff still shows up in the source code).

  • Maybe I need to be more specific...

Our forum is set up with several private forum areas. To join a forum, you have to request to join and a moderator approves. When your approval is made, you are added to a secondary user group that is the only group that can view the contents of the forum. So we have a number of publicly joinable usergroups.

When someone joins one of these groups, it is now displayed on their profile screen that they are a member. I need to find out how, in vB 3.7 beta 5 to HIDE these group memberships.

As a mommy forum, it isn't necessary for all members to know you are seeking Depression support or PPD support or weight loss support.

How do I make publicly joinable usergroups hidden?

  • i too would like to know how to make groups not viewable until you've been invited and accepted to join the group.

  • Ok, I can completely understand the 3.7 not being supported (although lots of other questions were answered... and this specific question IS answered for 3.6.8 with instructions on how to do it, but the template is different for 3.7 so the 3.6.8 instructions don't work).

My frustration was in not getting ANY response (even an it's not supported response, when clearly, many, many other 3.7 questions are answered).

It seems strange to take away something that could be done in the 3.6 series and done for legitimate purposes. Someone who joins a depression or addiction support group doesn't necessarily need everyone to know they have depression or addiction issues, but they should be allowed to "publicly" join and those are legitimate groups to have on a number of different forum groups.

It shouldn't be a code change, it should be a simple template edit... so my question remains, what template would need to be edited to remove the reference to the publicly joinable groups. I am a member of multiple forum boards that use the free pHp software... I chose to PAY for my board because I think that vB is a better software system all around, but it is unfortunate that the free software can easily do something that the paid for software can not do. This is also an issue with the calendar system (the free software can color code and categorize events easily). Both of those are very important features for a site like mine, just despite my investment, I can't use them.

Ok, I'm starting to lose patience here... is this posted in the wrong area? I have a legitimate question about vBulletin and how to do something. I've checked the main support page and it says to post the question within the forum for an answer... yet this is over two weeks old and I can't get a straight answer from anyone who actually knows.

And in the meantime, I've paid for support, and am getting NONE on this issue. It's a simple question. Can it be done or not and how do I do it?

I'm not asking for a customization, I'm asking a simple question and I'm getting very frustrated that I'm being ignored by the support staff. If this is NOT the area for this question, where is the correct area?

I have a board that has made a request for a new group and I pride myself on being responsive to my members, but I can't make their new group until I can hide the membership.
